I’ve read a lot of reviews on Vista – buggy, unstable, frustrating, can’t wait to upgrade to XP, etc. and then there are the unavoidable (admittedly entertaining) PC vs Mac commercials. I had a chance to work with a Mac this spring and didn’t find it any more intuitive or easier than a Windows PC. Plus I have a lot of valuable PC software, number one being Photoshop CS2. Emulation modes – forget it…
So when our oldest laptop started misbehaving recently (which later turned out to be because of AVG 8, find something else, it’s widely acknowledged to have major problems) we got a nice new laptop with dual cores, big enough hard drive to hold iTunes with room to spare, and – Vista. And SP1 came preinstalled. And the hardware is Vista certified. How bad could it be?
In two weeks:
- BSOD.
- Won’t turn off; have to use the power button and endure the “Windows did not shut down correctly” nag, yes, I know it did not shut down correctly for cripes sake…
- Vista won’t start and has to be repaired to start – the scariest one so far
- My “Vista Annoyances” book runs over 600 pages and is 3 cm thick – bigger than my “XP annoyances” book; isn’t Vista supposed to be better?
On the upside, when it runs, it runs great. It’s so cool to see two processors maxing out while rendering a Photoshop merge. The eye candy is delicious.
So, in net, I could roll back to XP, but it’s so much more fun never knowing what’s going to happen next – and being one of Microsoft’s lab rats…
