Using Picasaweb to share pictures

Key concepts:

  1. The pictures you want to share must be on your PC / MAC somewhere you can find them and where Picasa or iPhoto can locate them.
  2. Picasa and iPhoto are local applications running on your PC / MAC. Go here to download Picasa. Go here for help with Picasa.
  3. You can edit pictures in Picasa or iPhoto. You can also edit pictures in any external application like Photoshop, Easyshare, etc.
  4. Picasaweb is the online (on the internet) application where your online pictures are stored.
  5. The internet is the bridge between your PC / MAC and Picasaweb.
  6. You view and manage online pictures via a web browser (Firefox, Safari, Internet Explorer).
  7. There is a link on your Gmail (“Photos“) that will open Picasaweb for you. You may have an activation step if you haven’t done so already.

Steps:

  1. Copy / scan / download pictures to some location you can remember on your hard drive.
  2. PC: Open Picasa MAC: Open iPhoto
  3. Find / edit / annotate / select the pictures you want to send to the web
  4. PC: Click Web Album. You may need to log into Picasaweb. Pick an online album name or add to existing album. Pick the resolution for the online pictures. Pick whether the album is public or private. Click OK. MAC: Click Export. Select Picasaweb as destination. Then it’s the same as PC.
  5. Wait for pictures to upload. Click “View Online”
  6. A web browser will open. Now you can rearrange the pictures, add or change captions, pick an album cover, set a location where each picture was taken. Save your changes.

To share an album, navigate to the opening page for the album, copy the address in your browser (example: http://picasaweb.google.com/yourgmailname/yourwebalbumname), paste the address into an email and send the email. Your  album address will be http://picasaweb.google.com/yourgmailname followed by the album name and possibly a security code if the album is private.
