I wrote about problems with AVG 8. According to “Windows Vista Annoyances” (I really trust the O’Reilly series and annoyances.org), AVG is “a popular but poor-performing solution”. AVG 8 – yikes… Continue reading Post ID 30

New Laptop with Vista
I’ve read a lot of reviews on Vista – buggy, unstable, frustrating, can’t wait to upgrade to XP, etc. and then there are the unavoidable (admittedly entertaining) PC vs Mac commercials. I had a chance to work with a Mac this spring and didn’t find it any more intuitive or easier than a Windows PC. Plus I have a lot of valuable PC software, number one being Photoshop CS2. Emulation modes – forget it… Continue reading Post ID 30

Blog vs Website
A friend called me on the whole 1980’s, 1990’s, 21st century thing, pointing out how older is not necessarily worse. Fair enough.
The real reasons for going blog are several: Continue reading Post ID 30

Panorama of icy lake in Bishop Pass
On the way in to Bishop Pass on our last outing, we came upon a lake that was frozen over except around the edges. It was so beautiful I hated to leave.
I spent a few hours stitching this picture together from 7 individual pictures. Since I did not control the exposure setting when I took the pictures, it was a lot more work than it should have been.
If you’re thinking of downloading it, it’s stored in it’s full 12.4MB glory…

Using Picasaweb to share pictures
Key concepts:
- The pictures you want to share must be on your PC / MAC somewhere you can find them and where Picasa or iPhoto can locate them.
- Picasa and iPhoto are local applications running on your PC / MAC. Go here to download Picasa. Go here for help with Picasa.
- You can edit pictures in Picasa or iPhoto. You can also edit pictures in any external application like Photoshop, Easyshare, etc. Continue reading Post ID 30

Ouch!
Turns out Nadine badly sprained her wrist on a talus slope and is in a brace for 3-4 weeks. Hope she heals fast.
That’s two talus accidents I’ve been around for in the last few years.
I’ll be spending more time on how to move on high angle talus (before encountering the high angle talus) on future trips with the inexperienced…

Jim and Nadine’s Sierra Advenchah
Friends Jim and Nadine flew into town from Massachusetts a week ago last Friday night with the intention of bagging a big Sierra peak as well as visiting Yosemite NP and seeing the sights. We spent Friday night catching up and having a few be-ahs. If you don’t know what a be-ah is, then know Jim and Nadine are from near Bahston and it’ll become clearer…
First on the advenchah agenda was bagging a big Sierra peak, which, since all of us live about at sea level, was more likely if we got some high-altitude hikes under our belt. Continue reading Post ID 30

Quick trip to Bodega Bay area
Monday June 2 – Our plan is to go on a short trip, camp, and try out the setup we’ve created in our new camper – a shakedown cruise, if you will. The usual drill – food, water, electronics, clothing (unlike our recent trip to Zion NP, we took our warm clothes which turned out to be a good thing), sleeping bags, etc.
We always forget something – this time it was peanut butter – but we did remember the coffee! Continue reading Post ID 30

Canyoneering in Zion National Park
Back Story:
In early March of this year, we shared some pictures of our spring flowers with some friends and family. Nancy, who lives in Springdale, UT outside Zion NP, responded that she was “looking forward to a San Juan river trip in May.” Never ones to miss an opportunity to go to Zion, we responded “Sounds great – you must need someone to take care of Ellie while you’re gone.” Long story short, here we are living in Springdale like locals for a week in late May. We know Ellie appreciates us; she’s sitting on Carol’s lap demanding attention as I write this. Continue reading Post ID 30

Short Trip to Lone Pine and Death Valley
Just the pictures, thanks: http://tinyurl.com/2vkwdd
The long term forecast looked good (so much for long term forecasts). We had two weeks before we had another obligation to be home. We delayed leaving for one day to get our tomatoes planted.
Packed, all on board including our kitty, off we went. It was so green and beautiful and there were so many California poppies blooming, especially near San Luis reservoir – thousands blanketing the ridges on the hills. As we hit I-5, we started seeing all the fruit and nut trees blooming. Continue reading Post ID 30
